Who are you, what you do and who you serve?

We are Sara and Rebecca and our business is Union Table.  We are two interior decorators who saw a hole in the tableware rental market. We serve all those looking to create a modern and organic tablescape for a special event large or small by providing unique and high end tableware rentals.

What services do you offer?

Union Table offers a curated collection of tableware rentals with settings up to 200+.  In addition we offer table setting services at an additional charge when our rentals are being used at a venue.  Delivery and pick up are offered inside and outside the city.

How did you get started in the wedding industry, and what inspired you to start a rental business?

Sara and I have a background in design and we also love to host! When we were asked to design a tablescape for an event we couldn’t find the rental pieces we wanted to create a table that looked travelled, organic, rich with subtle colour and texture, Union Table was created from this need. Over time we were able to curate a beautiful collection of tableware that layers beautifully and creates the aesthetic that we were always after. Our small inventory suitable for parties of 8-32 grew with demand of Winnipegs wedding industry and now we are serving parties of 200 or more!

What do you enjoy most about working in the wedding industry and serving couples on their special day?

We love being a part of the planning process. When a Bride sends us her inspo board and we can collaborate with her creating something uniquely her. I also actually love delivery and pick up. I love being a piece in the puzzle of seeing how all the details came together, seeing the work of the talented vendors, meeting them, swapping stories. The wedding industry in Winnipeg is made up of some seriously wonderful (and talented) people!

What do you believe is the most important consideration when couples are choosing rentals?

Make sure you know what your venue is providing in terms of tableware. Have them show you a typical placesetting. A different set of flatware or glassware can take the table from standard to wow really fast!  Making a change such as replacing the venues poly satin napkin with a cotton linen napkin in a beautiful colour can personalize a tablescape.  Know the guidelines for open flame candles. If you’re working with a caterer in a venue that doesn’t have dinnerware, confirm with the caterer what they will need for service. Lastly, don’t sign up to do pick up and drop off yourself if you opt for no delivery. Find a friend or friend of a friend that is willing to bless you in that way and ensure that they have a BIG vehicle. A mini van with fold down seats would be ideal in most scenarios.

What is the ideal timeline for couples to book your services in advance of their wedding day?

3-6 months for dishes is usually enough, but some of our more popular items like our ribbed glassware, champagne flatware, candle chimneys and napkins should be rented 6-12 months in advance for the best chance of us being able to accommodate your request.

Can you share your favorite wedding trend or design idea that you're currently excited about?

One of our favourite trends that came out of the last few years was intimate weddings. They offer the opportunity to put a little more money into the things that make your day a reflection of you and your fiancé. You can splurge on a great caterer and offer something truly unique or rent one of your favourite restaurants for a venue, hire great entertainment, signature cocktails and stunning floral applications and stationary.

What is the best piece of advice you would offer to couples planning their wedding?

Don’t take on everything yourself or dole out responsibilities to your guests. If a wedding planner isn’t an option look for a day of coordinator. Looking back 15 years ago there were numerous things that could have been avoided if I had a designated person that could be a go between with all the vendors. My flowers showed up to the wrong venue, my brothers wound up getting stuck cleaning up chairs at the ceremony and were late for the reception, coffee wasn’t put out in-between. All things that could have been avoided if I knew better. Don’t make my mistake!

How do you stand out?

As Sara and I have selected pieces for our rental collection we chose pieces we would love to dress a table with for the events we host.  Special thought goes into selecting pieces that feel lovely in the hand, layer beautifully together and are unique to what’s available in Winnipeg.   We consider how light will reflect off the glassware, how your dinner will present on our dishes and how your event’s table will look through the lens of your photographer.  We love the thoughtful details!
