Who are you, what you do and who you serve?
My name is Austin Sukkau. I am a Lifestyle + Wedding Photographer in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I love to photograph couples and growing families.
What services do you offer?
I offer custom Wedding photography packages and 10+ years of experience in the wedding industry.
How did you get started in the wedding industry, and what inspired you to become a wedding photographer?
I grew up watching The Wedding Planner on repeat and envisioned a life exactly like Jennifer Lopez’s character (minus the whole "steal a groom" type of thing). But, I’ve always loved weddings and the way people plan their celebration. My “type A” planning mentality mixed with my need to “document everything” turned into this perfect chasm of wedding photography.
What do you enjoy most about working in the wedding industry and serving couples on their special day?
I love seeing creativity and individuality within a wedding celebration while also including traditional elements. I love meeting my couples (in person or over zoom) and seeing their excitement. I love when couples are overly detailed about what and who is so very important to them. I will go out of my way to capture the fine details and the people that are near and dear to the couple.
What do you believe is the most important consideration when couples are choosing a photographer?
The most important consideration when choosing a wedding photographer is… okay well I have 2…
a) You gotta see their style + examples of the work they produce. Therefore — seeing a portfolio of their work is vital. Ask your photographer see a few galleries that have the same “vibe"!
b) Your photographer is basically by your side all day… I think meeting to see if you “click” prior to the wedding (in a meeting or at an engagement session) is so important.
What is the ideal timeline for couples to book your services in advance of their wedding day?
The most ideal time to book photography services for me is 12-18 months prior to your wedding date (I only take on 5ish weddings per year), so with that in mind, earlier is better. That being said, I’ve also booked more intimate weddings a few weeks before the big day. It totally depends on the couple, the plans, and the # of hours of photography.
What is the best piece of advice you would offer to couples planning their wedding?
Oooh advice… okay I’ll go with the “family input” area of contention. Share what you envision about your day with your closest people (especially the non-negotiable details). Sometimes a “group think” is the BEST and most creative way to plan/orchestrate an idea. And always consider what the professionals suggest… we see a LOT of weddings hehe!
Can you share your favorite wedding trend or design idea that you're currently excited about?
Okay a current trend I am LOVING is including personalized photos at every place setting. This could be a photo of the bride/guest or groom/guest or just a photo of the guest. We wrote a personalized note of gratitude for each guest (back in 2018) and it went over very well. I think it’s so important to appreciate each and every guest that you choose to invite to witness the commencement of your love story. Yes, this is a ton of “work”, but it is also a testament to the what and who you value. Also, it’s a great way to kick off great and meaningful conversations at the table.
How do you stand out?
How do I “stand out” in this industry… ooof, I truly don’t know how to answer that one. I’d like to think I’m a “people person", I have a creative eye, and that I want to create a timeless wedding gallery (not necessarily follow the trends of the decade).
Anything else you would like to mention?
As I’ve entered the wild world of motherhood, I’ve grown to absolutely adore family sessions. It’s pretty cool to see my wedding clients with a baby/babies in tow!
