Why You Shouldn’t DIY Your Wedding

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

We all love saving money and being creative with DIY projects, but even the most Pinterest savvy bride should leave some elements of her wedding to the professionals. In this blog we will highlight some of the most important items to not DIY for your wedding.

First item we recommend not DIY-ing is your linens. Ordering inexpensive linens online can result in linens being too short or even too thin. Renting linens is a much safer option as you can see in-person exactly what you are getting and you can be confident in the quality of the linens. When ordering online they are usually packed very small for travel, and you will end up spending hours pressing them. Another perk of renting your linens is that you don't have to worry about cleaning them after the wedding, the rental company does all the cleaning!

The second item that we recommend leaving to the professionals is your floral arrangements. Floral arrangements take a lot of time, money and effort to assemble. The floral arrangements also need to be assembled closer to the wedding day and that is something you don't want to have to worry about a day or two before your big day. It is safer to leave it up to a florist to make your floral dreams come true! You don't want your blooms to wrinkle or fall flat before the wedding.

Your wedding cake shouldn't be on your DIY list for your wedding. Just like flowers wedding cakes take tons of time, effort and money especially as you go through trial and error trying to make it perfect. Even if baking a cake is your favourite thing to do its best to leave it up to a professional in this case. Its easy to mess up the fine details and doing it yourself may not meet your expectations. Wedding cakes also need to be made much closer to the wedding day as you don't want an old, dried out cake on your specials day. Leaving it up to a professional will ensure a tasty, beautiful, fresh cake for you and your guests to enjoy!

We suggest that if you love baking, try making the treats for the rehearsal dinner!

Doing your own hair and make up may save you a couple dollars, but its your wedding day and you deserve to be pampered! Hiring a professional make up artist and hair stylist allows you to relax, be in the moment and enjoy your mimosa. You won't have to worry about your mascara being clumpy or your eyebrows not being perfectly shaped or your hair not keeping a curl. Make up artist and hair stylist bring top quality products that will prevent your make up from being rubbed off or your hair from losing its style... its 100% worth the money and will save you time and stress. If you are worried about your hair and make up being too much you can always schedule a trial before the wedding and bring inspo pictures to ensure you get exactly what you want!

Next item we suggest not doing your self is your photos and video. Getting your cousin who is good at taking photos or setting up a video camera to record the ceremony and hiring a professional photographer and videographer are completely different! A professional will know how to guide you into poses, will know how to work with light so your photos aren't too dark or over exposed and they will be able to edit your photos to perfection! Hiring a professional photographer and videographer is absolutely worth the money. Your photos and video are the things you will cling to forever to be able to relive the best day!

A very important item that you should avoid DIY-ing at all costs is your wedding dress. Although you may enjoy sewing and designing clothes DIY-ing your wedding dress is not a good idea. Making a wedding dress takes a lot of time and attention to detail and while you are planning a wedding this is something you don't want to have to worry about. So much could go wrong in this situation that its much safer to  grab your girl gang and make a day out of wedding dress shopping. We also highly recommend getting your dress professionally altered as you don't want to make a mistake on this one!

Last but not least your wedding favours. If you are choosing to give your guests a wedding favour its best to not DIY them. Especially if you have a large guest list, putting together favours can become a full time job. Also finding a place in your house to store all of the favours might not be ideal.

Last but not least, wedding planning. Hire a professional to manage your wedding day timeline, vendor coordination, decor set up and all of the logistics. We have years of experience dealing with any scenario that might come up!

Happy Planning!
